Challenges & Solutions

Common Challenges in Honey Sachet Packaging

😤 What Goes Wrong
🍯
Honey stringing on nozzle disengagement leaves long sticky tails on seal area — seals fail, sachets leak in transit
🧊
Honey crystallizes in cold pipes overnight — morning startup needs steam thawing, losing 60+ minutes of production
🌡️
Excessive heat damages enzymes (HMF rises) and degrades premium manuka MGO value — quality loss = price loss
💧
Microscopic moisture absorption changes viscosity through the shift — same volumetric setting gives different gram weights
🐝
Pollen, propolis, and comb fragments in raw honey jam standard piston pumps — line stops every few minutes
📋
Manuka honey UMF/MGO certification requires gentle handling — aggressive pumps cause MGO degradation worth $$
OUR ANSWER
✅ Our Solutions
Servo cut-off nozzle with timed suck-back retract + cold-knife wire cut option — zero stringing, every sachet clean-sealed
Heated bulk hopper + heated manifold + heated nozzle all jacketed — no overnight crystallization, immediate startup
Precision temperature control ±1°C in 35–50°C range (HMF-safe zone) + bypass logic for premium manuka <40°C
Net-weigh checkweigh option for premium products + closed-loop piston correction maintains gram-accurate fill
Lobe pump option for raw / particulate honey with 5mm clearance — comb fragments and pollen pass through intact
Low-shear gentle lobe pump path + minimal pressure spikes preserves MGO value in manuka — certified-grade handling

New Zealand manuka honey stick line
New ZealandManuka Exporter

NZ Manuka Brand Preserves MGO Through Filling

A premium New Zealand manuka exporter was losing certified MGO value during filling — aggressive piston shear and elevated fill temperature were degrading bioactive compounds. Switching to a low-shear lobe pump + ≤40°C precision-controlled fill preserved MGO certification grade, protecting a $40/jar premium product.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What buyers most often ask before purchasing.

What temperature is safe for honey filling?

+

Honey is sensitive to heat damage. Above 60°C, enzymes denature and HMF (5-hydroxymethylfurfural — a quality marker) rises. International standards allow up to 40mg/kg HMF for table honey. We recommend fill temperature 35–50°C for standard honey, ≤40°C for premium grades, ≤37°C for raw honey claims. Our 3-zone heated jacket maintains ±1°C precision in this range.

Can the machine handle manuka without degrading MGO?

+

Yes — this is critical for premium manuka producers. MGO is the bioactive compound that justifies manuka's price premium and it's degraded by heat and mechanical shear. We use a low-shear lobe pump with smooth fluid path transitions, precision temperature ≤40°C, and minimal pressure spikes. We provide pre-and-post-fill MGO testing during FAT to validate no degradation.

How do you prevent stringing at the nozzle?

+

Two-stage solution: (1) servo cut-off valve closes during the last 5–10% of fill, then (2) programmed suck-back retracts a small honey volume into the nozzle, breaking surface tension. For the stickiest honeys (very high viscosity or partially crystallized) we offer an optional cold-wire knife cut: a thin tensioned wire passes across the nozzle tip making a clean break.

What about raw honey with pollen, propolis, or comb fragments?

+

Standard piston filler will crush these fragments and clog. For raw honey we use a lobe pump (positive-displacement rotary pump) with 5mm internal clearance — pollen pieces, propolis chunks, and small comb fragments pass through intact, preserving the raw/unfiltered claim. Fluid path is sized for the largest particulates in your specific honey.

How do you keep honey from crystallizing in the lines overnight?

+

Crystallization is the #1 productivity killer on honey lines. We supply 24/7 maintenance heating on the bulk tank, manifold, and pump body — set point typically 35°C, just above the crystallization-trigger zone. Energy use is modest (200–800W depending on machine size). When the line restarts in the morning, the entire fluid path is already liquid at fill temperature.

Can the same machine handle creamed honey?

+

Creamed (whipped) honey is denser and has a textured consistency — different rheology from liquid honey. We use a piston filler with slightly larger ports rather than the standard configuration. Some customers run liquid honey shift 1 and creamed honey shift 2 on the same machine; the swap is essentially a recipe change + brief warm cycle to clear residual product.

What films work for honey sachets?

+

Standard: PE/PET laminate for HoReCa sticks (cost-effective, hermetic). Premium: foil-PE laminate for manuka and high-value retail (full oxygen and moisture barrier). Compostable: PLA-based films are increasingly demanded for organic and eco-positioned brands. We test seal parameters on your specific film during the sample trial — honey can absorb moisture from the film if barrier is inadequate.

What output rates are typical?

+

Honey stick pack (8g, 6 lanes): 200–400 sticks/min depending on viscosity and fill weight. Retail sachet (20g): 80–120 sachets/min. Bulk pail (5kg): 10–20 pails/min. Honey is rate-limited by fluid dynamics more than mechanical speed — thicker honey at lower fill temperature is slower than thinner honey at upper fill temperature. We size to your actual product viscosity.
